Extraordinary Islamic Art; Ben Youssef Madersa, Marrakesh Morocco

Friday 29 October 2010

Located in the northern medina of Marrakesh the Ben Youssef Medersa is one of Moroccos most exquisite buildings. It exemplifies Andalusian and Moroccan art and architecture from the 14th and 16th centuries. The medersa was a center for Koranic learning, where up to 900 students lived in learned. Every available surface is intricately decorated in carved stucco, lintel screens, carved cedar doors, and zellij tile. The art and architecture is largely Andalusian-influenced with many parallels to Spains Alhambra Palace in Granada. If you visit only one building in Marrakesh, make sure it is this stunning medersa.
